Welcome Aboard!

During the transition period of the Waterfront Market becoming part of the Natural Retail Group, certain features will not be offered to Waterfront customers. These features include but are not limited to the following: Super Discount Days, Monthly Basket Raffles, Monthly Sales Flyer, Weekly Produce Specials and other regularly priced and sale items.

We want to inform all our customers and employees of Waterfront that it is not our intention to make any drastic changes to this neighborhood market. Our goal is to improve on the quality and quantity of service that this great store has offered the community of Key West, Florida for the last 20 years.

During this transition period, customers will notice some minor changes and we will be adding some or all of the features mentioned above.

At this time we want to thank all Waterfront Market customers for continuing shopping with us and to all current employees, welcome aboard!

History

Waterfront Market began over 20 years ago as a small wholesale produce business that Buco Pantelis took over from a friend.  He began buying quality produce from Miami and offering some retail items in a 200 square foot space.  After a couple years he moved the business to its current building, which at the time was an abandoned fish warehouse located on the water in the Historic Seaport district. The store was centered on the waterfront side of the building, offering 3000 square feet of space that he opened as a retail and wholesale grocery store.  Originally, the fresh fish was sold next door as a separate business, but eventually Waterfront Market assumed ownership and integrated the two.

In 1992 the city took over the building and Waterfront Market moved back from the water expanding to over 11,000 square feet and leaving a passageway open to the waterfront.  To help make this move possible, over 250 community members came to help out.  “Waterfront Market is very much a community store,” said Pantelis.  And it shows.

In 1993 the well known artist Wyland painted a large mural on one outer wall of Waterfront Market.  2003 marked its 10th anniversary and he returned to paint another “Whaling wall” in collaboration with Guy Harvey to cover the faded original and wrap around the building.  It serves as a nonprofit environmental awareness project. There are more than 90 of these painted walls all over the world.  Inside the Market another mural is displayed painted by Wyland and the children of Key West.

Natural Retail Group (NRG) purchased Waterfront Market on March 6, 2008.  NRG plans to preserve the current appeal of the market while enhancing it so as to provide an even fuller experience for customers.  They will continue to buy fresh fish from local fisherman, and will offer that fish along with the fresh meats and cheeses that are currently available.  Plans include expansion of the deli area, offering more variety in freshly prepared foods such as cold foods, hot foods, soups, salad bar, and ready-to-eat foods.  NRG also plans to offer more variety of grocery and supplement products, always providing the largest selection and highest quality of natural products at reasonable prices to Key West consumers.

The wholesale division of the business provides fresh produce and groceries to over 50 local restaurants and businesses.  NRG will continue to operate the wholesale unit so that these businesses can maintain the highest quality ingredients in the foods that they prepare.
